Manchester Metropolitan University launches a new part time accountancy degree, which will see some students sponsored by local businesses and given jobs when they graduate.
A new part time degree programme will be launched today by Manchester Metropolitan University which will see some students offered a sponsored accountancy course and a guaranteed job for a local company when they graduate.
Graham Holt, Associate Dean– Senior Lecturer at MMU Business School
Patrick Lydon – FCA, a Senior Partner at Warings Chartered Accountants in Bolton
The course which starts from January 2012, will offer students the chance to gain a degree, a Masters degree, and two professional finance qualifications for under £15,000*.(*Including professional registrations and study texts) The course has been created in direct response to the governments increase in tuition fees, allowing students a significantly more affordable route to higher education as well as offering the flexibility of being able to study while working as well.
Because students only have to attend two three-hour sessions a week, at £2,800 per year the course is significantly cheaper than a full time standard degree which from September will be in and around the £8,000 mark. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to have the entire course paid for them by a local business which chooses to sponsor them; resulting in a guaranteed job once they graduate.
It’s hoped the new scheme will encourage those who see cost and time as a barrier to getting qualified and help reenergise North West economies with an influx of qualified accountants, who will also be equipped with the skills to turn entrepreneurial business ideas into reality.
The unique programme, will be offered in partnership with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) – who collectively represent over 250,000 accountants worldwide and has been designed to allow those wishing to follow a career in accountancy, a cost-effective and flexible route to develop their professional finance skills.
The full BA (Hons) in Professional Accountancy (including the AAT Accounting Qualification) can be achieved in just three years and nine months, while a further two years will result in completion of ICAEW’s ACA Qualification and a Masters in Professional Accountancy. The course will be delivered in a University class-room environment, via MMU’s well-respected Business School, in two 3-hour weekly sessions, and a recognised qualification is achieved on completion of each stage. Its entry requirements are comparable with other business-related degree programmes: 280 UCAS points with GCSEs at Grade C or above in Maths and English, or completion of AAT’s Level 3 Diploma in Accounting.
For those wanting to know more, the MMU will be holding a Programme Open Day on Wednesday 23rd November.
